FND Awareness Day: Spreading Awareness and Support

FND Awareness Day

Today is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Awareness Day, a day dedicated to shining light on this often misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition. FND affects thousands of people worldwide, yet many still struggle to find proper recognition, support, and treatment. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, know someone with FND, or want to learn more, today is an opportunity to spread awareness and understanding.

What is Functional Neurological Disorder?

FND is a neurological condition where the brain struggles to send and receive signals correctly, leading to real and often debilitating symptoms. Unlike conditions caused by structural damage (such as multiple sclerosis or stroke), FND is a disorder of function, meaning the nervous system isn’t working as it should. Symptoms can vary widely, but some of the most common include:

  • Muscle weakness or paralysis
  • Tremors, spasms, or involuntary movements
  • Seizure-like episodes (also known as non-epileptic seizures)
  • Walking and balance difficulties
  • Speech and communication issues
  • Numbness, tingling, or sensory changes
  • Cognitive difficulties like brain fog and memory issues
  • Chronic fatigue and dizziness

Despite being one of the most common neurological disorders diagnosed in neurology clinics, FND is still widely misunderstood. Many people face skepticism from medical professionals, employers, and even family and friends, making the journey even more challenging.
